Enterprise & innovation; Who else is out there? How good are they?

All of the designers I have chosen are people i've been familiar with for a while so understand the type of work they create. Vaughan Oliver in particular is someone to look up to because he is well known for his work within the music industry, i've also been to a guest lecture in which he spoke at my previous college so was able to interact with this designer and get more of an understanding of what he tries to achieve.

Julian Opie

Strengths
- Visually exciting website that interacts in the style of a book. Very unique.
- Lives in London so has greater opportunities by being in a city where more design work can be found.
- Creates a style of work that can be recognised as his own and looks different to existing works.
- Has his schedule visible in terms of exhibitions and such so people are aware of where they can find his work.

Weaknesses
- His work is very minimalist so may only appeal to a smaller target audience.
- Although the website is exciting it doesn't seem to have much connection with his style.

Adde Russel

Strengths
- The animals in the artists work look almost life like and have a real sense of character to them.
- Using the skill of painting is not seen as often in album artwork so it makes the style very unique.
- The artist comes from a very large city where there a likely to be bigger and better opportunities.

Weaknesses
- The website is quite confusing and makes it seem as though it just hasn't loaded properly when you first access it. It is then quite complicated to navigate round once you figure the interactive side of it out.
- There is a lack of general information about the artist so it makes them seem somewhat mysterious.
- Pieces created by this artist will only suit a certain type of person due to the main subject matter being animals.
- Painting may seem a little dated within the music industry in terms of design work.

Vaughan Oliver

Strengths
- The mixture of photography and other digital software enhancements used to produce the work are very much with the times.
- The digital production of the work also suits the way that album covers and such are generally created.
- He has many years experience and has been able to create a full body of work that is likely to encourage more people to approach him.
- He has a strong relationship with two design agency's in particular, 23 envelope and V23 which helped him connect with the music industry.
- He is another designer to come from London so is in the best possible place to pick up opportunities.

Weaknesses
- As it currently stands his website is 'under construction' so there is no way of getting in touch with this designer or viewing his works and designers should always be accessible if possible.

Summary
The design world is always going to be a competitive industry wether or not I believe and others believe what is out there, is good. As a young designer you need to be willing to gain the confidence to throw yourself out there into the lime light otherwise you are likely to be passed by on some levels. As a current designer being part of the industry you are constantly competing to come up with new and unique ideas and be the best. A younger design maybe has a slight advantage in the fact they can relate more to the current flow of the music industry and they are fresh with ideas where as someone who has been part of this business for a while will eventually exhaust their ideas. However, that said a younger designer doesn't have the experience and skill that a current professional has and when clients are looking for a designer they may want someone who has had more experience but they could be seen as more aware. This however poses the question of if people are not willing to give you opportunities how do you gain this experience? Each of the designers I have discussed above have so much experience in the industry and have managed to establish themselves and create work for well known bands. These designers could be people to look up to because they do produce some fantastic pieces but they are technically my competition and as I have found weaknesses it becomes clear what I need to do to be better.
