Enterprise & innovation; How will I promote myself?

To work in the kind of industry I am interested in I need to search for my clients and prove to them why I would be a good designer to work with. I would need to market myself at industry events by handing out a well executed business card that will make myself memorable. Gaining a range of contacts will be useful because one may recommend myself to another and this is one way to locate work.

I need to promote myself as being knowledgable in the music industry. If I search for smaller clients myself and produce some design work for bands that may eventually be up and coming, this gets my foot in the door and will be a good example for high end clients of the work I can produce. Producing sample work will also mean I have something to show clients. I may need to focus on clients which suit my particular design style or be willing to expand my skills to work for a range of clients.

Although I have never had a great interest in living in the city I need to promote myself as being a designer that will be willing to follow the work in an effort to create a positive client/designer relationship. You are likely to gain more by willing to go that little bit further for your client.

I need to be willing to compromise and take critical feedback because this will prove to the client I am going to be a good designer to work with and they will get exactly what they want. I need to be able to keep everything on a professional level and constantly communicate to find out if the direction I am taking suits what they are looking for. Communication will come in the form of emails, phone calls and most importantly meetings - the meetings are a key part of this idea of me being able to go a little bit further and travel to the client.

I can promote myself by creating design work for one band who may then recommend me to another and then I could become recognised through things such as the internet. It is however, going to be important that I continue to create sample work that can be posted to websites such as behance because I need to push myself out where I can be seen.

Summary;
Promoting myself in this particular industry would be quite difficult because more often than not you need to seek the client rather than the other way round. If I want to be recognised in this particular industry I need to create work that I can post on design websites if the clients are searching for people to create their next album for example. Creating a network of people within this industry will help me gain more work because one client may recommend me to another and with expansion of this network i'm more likely to be busy. I essentially need to be willing to approach clients and have the confidence to do so, rejection is never a bad thing because if you leave someone with a business card, they may consider you at a later date and they may even look into the sort of work you do. One of the most important aspects is the fact I need to be willing to take to a new design style to meet the needs of the client, this doesn't mean to say my current style will be pushed to one style, I just may need to tweak it a little bit. This particular industry is quite competitive so I need to be completely aware of what is already out there and promote myself in a way that seems unique and fresh, so that consumers will have never seen such works. Creating a website may get my foot in the door too because people tend to communicate a lot via the internet in the modern age and it means my work can be accessible to anyone, anywhere.

PPD study task two - Industrial experience.

What is industrial experience?
- Industrial experience can be a days work placement, a few weeks or a month because you get hands on experience in the part of the industry that you are interested in wether this be shadowing a current professional or taking part in a brief yourself.

- It can also be a day visit to a studio or printers etc because this means you will have experienced how these things operate and have an understanding.

- Industrial experience involves having some sort of conversation possibly ongoing to build a relationship with a professional that could then lead to work experience or an internship.

- An internship is an important method of getting your foot in the door because this is a form of industrial experience that could then lead to a full time job.

- Industrial experience is a method of building on skills that may previously exist or learning new ones that will help you be a successful designer.

What can you learn from industrial experience?
- Industrial experience can help you decide if this is the field that really suits your personal design practice, it is likely to answer any questions you have and help you make decisions about your next step in life as far as your career is concerned.

- You may receive feedback on your own practice that can help you become a more confident and experimental designer, this coming from professionals that have experienced education so have an idea of what clients may be looking for and what sits well with the consumers.

- Through conversation with professionals you get an honest opinion of the particular design field your interested in which is likely to help you understand it more and make you aware the industry is quite competitive.

- It gives you the opportunity to test before you commit which is a rare thing in the working world.

- Industrial experience will expand your skills, possibly help you learn new tricks and also understand certain aspects better such as the printing process because although this is 'passed over' it is still important that the designer understands this so they format their work correctly.

What form/format can industrial experience take?
- Work experience is the most common form of industrial experience. Work experience comes in a range of different lengths from a day to a year depending on what position the person taking the work experience is in eg. student and wether or not this is part of their programme. Its the most popular form of industrial experience because it gives you the opportunity to take a hands on approach to the industry, learn from those who are already experienced and gives you greater understanding of what exactly you would be doing if you were to commit to this work path.

- Studio visits count as industrial experience because you are gaining the knowledge of how a certain aspect of the industry works although you don't get this hands on approach. You are able to see professionals in their working environment and ask questions in relation to what they do.

- A small understanding of industrial experience could come from live briefs. This is generally because you are working for a client so they ask for certain requirements but this work comes unpaid. If your work is chosen you also get an idea of how people how responded to this and responses are quite important in particular because graphic design needs to communicate. The contact with the client will also be of great importance because it will teach you how best to build the right relationships with clients and as more clients are contacted you will become more confident at this.

- Industrial experience also comes from workshops taught at university level wether this be digital software or more hands on such as screen print. The software used is of industry standard so although the skills learnt will be basic, they are a very useful thing to have so your not 'thrown in at the deep end' when it comes to starting out in industry.

- Industrial experience can come from lectures given by visiting professionals. This can be quite useful because they can give both the pro's and con's and will be very honest about their own experiences. Its also another opportunity to ask any questions you may have as a young designer.

What areas of industry are you interested in?
- Design for print. I prefer to create work in which I have something physical to interact with at the end of a project, it somehow feels like more of an achievement for myself and some of the finishes you can get through the use of stock are great. I also really appreciate the more hands on methods of design for print such as screen print because its different and the handmade result produced is visually engaging. I also find all the industry standard methods of printing really interesting because the possibilities for design are endless.

- Illustration. This particular thing can fall into quite a few categories as far as the industry is concerned such as editorial in terms of children's story books. I've always had an interest in illustration because it holds character and uniqueness to the person who has designed the piece of work. I've always tended to hand draw all of my illustrations for my own work and then take it into photoshop to edit. Although at the moment I tend to doodle quite a lot i'm hoping I can develop this skill in the next two years at least for it to be a possible career choice.

- Freelance. The idea of being a freelance designer has always been at the back of my mind because i'm quite independent and more often than not don't really enjoy working in a group. I feel these two aspects are definitely two of my weaknesses but this is why freelance work speaks to me. Im aware this is one of the most difficult ways to become a successful designer because you have to put yourself 'out there' to be seen and work tends to be steady and may include quieter periods. I have seen quite a few people that inspire me and make me feel confident about this area of the industry, for this I need to be willing to work harder than ever.

- Music. I'm a massive fan of music and the music industry. The idea of working as a designer for bands and record labels is something i've thought about since starting graphic design at college. I find this sort of area would suit me because I already have an understanding and can relate to it as a consumer. It's quite important to be able to understand what the consumers are looking for and what styles suit each singer/band. I've always had an appreciation for the artwork created to go alongside albums and also the posters and merchandise created for concerts and the fact these things are seen by millions of people would be a great way to make yourself known.

- Advertising. This is probably bottom of my list for career options because although I enjoy creating this kind of work, I feel as though i'm not entirely passionate about it. All design work tends to have a purpose but I feel with advertising it could be a positive challenge because this is defined purpose and this area of the industry is so competitive it's more likely to encourage me to think outside the box. This is because i'd want to beat whats already existing out there.

What are you concerns about industrial experience?
- Sometimes when you get in touch with professional agencies etc they say you aren't experienced enough but how are you supposed to get this experience if people aren't willing to give you a chance?

- What exactly may you be required to do on a work placement?

- How good do your current skills have to be? Are they expecting you to be a fantastic designer?

- Where do I start if i'm not entirely sure what I want to do in terms of career yet?

- Is my confidence or lack of going to have a huge impact on industrial experience or will professionals be understanding of this?

SUMMARY
- Industrial experience is the perfect opportunity to take a hands on approach as to what your career choice will entail.
- Industrial experience is the opportunity to mix with professionals and ask questions.
- You will learn wether or not the area you are interested in is actually all that you thought it'd be and if it suits you.
- You will also learn how a typical industrial environment works on a day to day basis.
- Work experience is one of the best and most common ways of getting your foot in the door because it is recognised by potential employers.
- Industrial experience takes many forms, some which are optional and some which you have to pursue yourself.
- I have a broad range of interests within the industry but need to select a direction I think i'm going to enjoy most and get the most out of.
- Conversations with current professionals in each of these areas may help me decide.
- My concerns are all questions that I can pose to someone with the experience already.
- I will never truly know what industrial experience is like until I experience so I may end up answering my own questions by finding a work placement.

Good is... concept crit.

Comment on the extent to which the initial research and development of the concept demonstrates a significant understanding of the chosen subject matter...
Good research about the history of the ipod, this could be developed into strong concepts.

Comment on the extent to which the concept proposal exploits the practical and conceptual investigation and application of design for print...
The apple branding is already quite strong so perhaps special finishes such as spot varnish and foil blocking will add to their strong design.

Comment on the proposed range of products to be produced in response to a clearly identified problem...
A broad variety of different ideas, lots of different directions and possible outcomes.

Additional comments...
More direction and a focus on one strong idea.
Try more innovative packaging.

ACTION PLAN
Possibly create an ad campaign to promote and inform people.
Packaging design to enhance on Apple's existing packaging if possible. Look at colour schemes (Apple's previous stripy logo).

Although I felt the comments made about my current concept were very brief they have helped me consider a new direction to take my work in but still with using some of the ideas I have already considered. I have very much warmed to the idea of create some kind of ad campaign as this seems to have a much greater potential and this project can also be my opportunity I have previously written about to experiment with packaging design. Overall I need to focus my ideas more so I am certain of the direction my project is going to take, this will include revisiting my current concept statement.

Good is... concept crit.

We presented our concept to a group of people who were completely unaware of what our ideas have been throughout this project so far. This was really helpful because it meant we could test to see if our ideas really did work when explained briefly and we could get some fresh opinions. The group gave feedback on my ideas as they stand at the moment.

Strengths;
- A full body of research shows that I understand my topic well.
- Such a broad topic leaves for many ideas so i'm unlikely to get stuck.
- I have many ideas already for products which can be brought together to create a range.

Areas for improvement;
- Choose some of my ideas that can work well together and focus.
- Use the fact that ipods have been out for so long with so many different generations to my advantage.

Additional comments;
- A campaign may be more successful because people are already aware of what ipods are so there is only so far the information graphics idea can be taken, but a campaign can have a variation of products that serve different purposes.
- Bring back the classics?
- Limited edition/anniversary
- Recycle the ipod logo
- Could possibly come up with a collectors set so they don't necessarily need to work because they are there to be seen.
- Could create the old style ipods as cases to put on the newer generations.

This crit has really helped me in deciding where to take my project next. I feel changing my idea quite considerably is going to be more beneficial because some of the ideas above that have been suggested seem much more exciting and also give me more to work with. I will need to revisit my project rationale to clarify my new ideas and thoughts.

'Wrap it up' packaging crit & overall task evaluation.

We had to leave our final packaging nets all made up as best as possible for others to crit so we could see how well we'd executed the task. The feedback was quite useful and if I were to take this task further i'm now more aware of the things I can do to make my packaging better.
Overall this task has been of great use to me because it helped ease me back in to the design process after the summer break, it got me thinking creatively again and also reminded me how to critically evaluate the work of others. With creating the 150 logos this brought to my attention something that I was already aware of in a sense but had never put into practice so much, this was that creating so many ideas is actually more useful than just a few because the ideas may get better and more exciting the more there are. Using this process also gets rid of the 'worst' ideas first so I end up using some of my best. This task has also made me want to design for packaging in at least one of my projects this year as I quite enjoyed this aspect and experimenting with how the logo interacted with the packaging.

Enterprise & innovation; Where are they? How will they find me?

Where are my potential clients/employers located?
My clients could be located all over the world depending on which bands, singers or record label i'm working with. This question all depends on where I choose to settle with my career in a sense but then again I could also send work overseas because the technologies allow things like video calling which means meetings can be had online and work can also be sent digitally. With something like the music industry bands and singers are constantly on the move too so they sometimes don't have a direct location.

What media do my potential clients/employers use?
My clients use digital media and print based media mainly. Things like websites, music downloads and posters can be found digital based online usually for bands and singers. This is because the internet is used as a social tool which means that it's quite an easy yet effect way of getting yourself seen and heard. When it comes down to things like tours, the audience are more likely to go searching for these things online because it's quick, easy and can be done from the comfort of your own home. Music downloads on programmes such as itunes also holds such a massive market nowadays, again for convenience because it can be done from the comfort of your own home so the album artwork would be seen digitally on the audiences computer screen. The digital media category falls under design for screen in some senses where websites, downloads and online tour posters are concerned but photography also falls into this category and is not necessarily used just for screen. Photography tends to be quite a popular media within the music industry because bands and singers use images of themselves on tour posters and album covers. Print based media is a massive part of the music industry because album covers, tour posters, t-shirts etc. are all printed so they can advertise and provide information for the audience. Posters and album covers come under the same kind of process but t-shirts may be mass screen printed as this is a popular form.

What do you need to communicate and how does it match your clients/employers need?
I need to create a positive image of the client(s) to convince people to either buy the album/concert tickets/merchandise. Whatever it may be that i'm creating needs to be visually engaging and memorable, it needs to climb above the things that are already out there as the music industry is a huge market. The designs need to be politically correct as they will be seen by billions of people so I need to be sure they won't offend anyone or cause any trouble for my client. There is a fine line and I just need to be sure that I don't cross it. More than ever really I need to encourage people to buy whatever it may be that i'm promoting because the current economical climate means that people are cutting back on 'treats' and things like music albums and concert tickets are seen as a treat. I need to entice people in and make the product play in their mind. The designs will have to communicate to certain social groups wether it be stereotypes or age groups because different styles are going to communicate to different target audiences and are automatically associated with certain social groups. All of the things i've mentioned previously will suit my clients needs because they need to be able to sell themselves to their audience and make the audience want to buy into them again and again as the music industry and music as a career is an ongoing thing. Keeping the design politically correct is quite an important factor for the client because their career could be effected by something like this. Due to the fact I also have an understanding of whats good and bad and the current trends this is going to suit the clients needs because they need to keep up with the times. Most of all the client needs someone with the skill to produce the media they need and this is something I will have.
